Week 4 Sit with Correction

Equipment:  6' leash, training collar, and food reward

STEP 1:  Walk with your dog, and them come to a stop.  Do have a food reward in your hand or readily accessible in a treat pouch.
STEP 2:  Say "Sit" and give your dog a good "1 Mississippi Second" to complete the task.
STEP 3A:  If your dog did the task, then say "Good Boy" and possibly give food reward (see notes below).
STEP 3B:  If your dog did not do the task, give a well timed collar correction. For Tanner, he gets a food reward for responding to the collar correction (so try not to lure him with the treat unless he is stuck, otherwise let him do it on his own on the feel of the collar.   When he completes the task, give him a "Good Boy" and food reward. NOTE:  Remember the correct way to give a collar correction has to do with a clean movement not the power behind the correction.   You just want it to be like a tap on the shoulder.   The correction goes as follows:  1)  The collar should be loose before the correction 2)  the collar should then snapped (not hard just the motion) tight, and 3)  then made completely loose again.
STEP 4:   Repeat for about 5 to 10 minutes at first.    When the time comes that you can get 4 in a row without correction, then you will probably only need to do five minutes to get to the goal of 3 sets of 4 in a row without corrections (and eventually also without food reward).

Notes About Food Rewards:

  • Reward with food when he responds to a correction this week.
  • Once he is getting the sit without a correction and you are getting four in a row easily, reward every other sit without correction with a food reward.  You will still be rewarding him with food when he responds to a correction.
  • Once you are doing well with rewarding him every other time he does a sit without a correction, move him to doing four sits without a correction before getting a food reward (or three at first if that is too hard for him).   You will still be rewarding him with food when he responds to a correction.
  • The goal will eventually be to not have to reward him with anything but praise, and get in your 3 sets of four in a row.
