Week 1 Homework

NOTE 1:  ALL TRAINING SHOULD BE DONE WITH TRAINING COLLAR AND TRAINING LEASH DONE.

NOTE 2:  DO NOT LEAVE TRAINING COLLAR ON WHEN YOU ARE NOT ACTIVELY TRAINING YOUR DOG.

NOTE 3:  EVERYTHING THIS WEEK SHOULD BE DONE IN LOW AND EASY DISTRACTION, UNLESS IT IS TOO VERY EASY.  IN THAT CASE, YOU CAN SLIGHTLY INCREASE THE DISTRACTION FOR SIT ON THE DOG FOR INSTANCE.

NOTE 4:  WHEN I SAY  EASY, THIS MEANS THE DOG IS CALM, NOT PANTING, AND YOU CAN DO THE MORE ACTIVE EXERCISES FOUR TIMES IN A ROW EASILY.

NOTE 5:  THE TEXT IN BLUE GOES TO THE LINKS OF THE DIRECTIONS OR THE VIDEOS FOR THE EXERCISES.

NOTE 6:  IF YOU DON'T GET THROUGH ALL THE EXERCISES IN ONE DAY, YOU CAN JUST BE SURE THAT THE EXERCISES YOU DID NOT GET TO ARE DONE THE NEXT DAY.   THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE, I THINK, IS THE MOLDED SITS.   HOWEVER, THEY ALL WORK TOGETHER TO START TO CHANGE BEHAVIOR.

NOTE 7:  THE GOALS ARE PLACES TO WORK TO IN THE FUTURE.  IF YOU DON'T MAKE THE GOAL, DON'T WORRY AS LONG AS YOU PUT IN THE WORK TOWARDS THE GOAL.  PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN CALL OR EMAIL ME WITH ANY TRAINING PROBLEMS THAT COME UP IN BETWEEN LESSONS.

Homework and Time Suggestions:

  1. Read through entire blog.  You can take your time on the articles at the end, but these are pieces of dog training that may be very valuable to you going forward.   So try to read through all of the articles, it may bring up additional questions or give you some clarity on dog training.
  2. Sit on The Dog [video] 30 + minutes  Goal:  To have Tanner able to settle into a down (not the down command, his chosen position) in less than five minutes inside.  Tanner controls much of this, but the exercise with the short leash (so that he can only lie or stand down beside you) manipulates this in our favor.  NOTE:  IN THE EVENT THE DOG DOES NOT GO DOWN THE FIRST FEW TIMES (THIS HAPPENS WITH ANXIOUS OR WIRED DOGS) WE CAP THIS AT 1 HOUR AND RRY AGAIN THAT DAY OR THE NEXT DAY.  IF THE DOG GOES DOWN 45 MINUTES INTO IT, I WILL USUALLY STAY THERE THE NEXT HALF HOIR, BUT YOU DIN'T HAVE TO ESPECIALLY IF NATURE IS CALLING OR YOU HAVE SOMETHING YOU NEED TO DO.
  3. Molded Sits  [video20  minutes NOTE: SINCE HE BRACES DO 20 MINUTES INSTEAD OF 100 REPS (WHICH MAY STILL HAPPEN AS HE GETS MORE COMFORTABLE).  YOU CAN BREAK THAT TIME INTO 2 SESSIONS OF 10 MINUTES OR 4 SESSIONS OF 5 OR ANY OTHER COMBINATION THAT MAKES SENSE.  Goal:  To be able to start this at the end of the week by holding the chain as we usually begin and molding him into a sit.   That being said, do give him treats when he needs it.  At some point he will feel like melting ice cream as you hide the treat, and then maybe you can start to give the food reward at every other one, and then every fourth one, and finally try it without the food reward.
  4. Intro to Place [video] 2 minutes or less  Goal:  Just to introduce him to a new place object.  You only need to do this once per new place object and/or environment.   The pointing makes it become so later on, he will recognize any object different from the ground with a border a potential place object.
  5. Send to Place [video] and Circle Place  [video] 15 minutes in total  Goal:  For send to place you want to be able to get three sets of four in a row (without needing to correct or hold tension on the leash once on, so try and block any attempts off with a leash correction or body bump).  For circle place, you want to be able to get four in a row easily starting with one circle, and eventually building up to one minute.  Do it slowly so it is easy before you increase the duration.
